Young starlet Miley Cyrus shocked the world this year with her performance at the MTV VMAs. But is there a lesson here that can be learned for your business?

What can your business learn from Miley Cyrus!?

Unless you've been truly living under a rock the past 2 months you have heard and seen more than you probably ever wanted to of Miley Cyrus. Her outlandish performance at the MTV VMAs was quite literally the talk of the town for weeks, and continues to generate headlines. Was this a thoughtless act, that just happened to catch everyone by surprise or was it well conceived plan, taken right from Charlie Sheen’s playbook? Either way it teaches a valuable lesson that you can apply to your business.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
-- Steve Jobs

Before her sexed up routine at the VMAs on August 25th Cyrus was a mildly successful 20 year old pop star, who was well known to her fans. Within days of the infamous performance her name was known by everyone’s fans. If you’ve done anything well with your own business you are probably well known and popular to your own customers, but show well are you known to your competitor’s customers? What if everyone’s customers knew about you?

I’m not saying you should strip down and perform a raunchy dance routine with the first singer in a stripped suit that comes along, but the concept is the same. Make some noise. Shake things up. Do something unexpected! In the days, weeks, and even months since Miley’s August performance other stars, the press, fans, little old ladies, and anyone with a twitter has spoken out about their feelings towards the Twerkpocolypse. And THAT is the point. People who never even knew who the girl was are now familiar with the name of her newest album and have probably even seen her VMA performance. Blogs have been written, news stories aired, spoof videos posted, and halloween costumes designed, all from this one event.

If you focus on doing something exciting, unexpected, or off the wall with your business what kind of buzz could you generate? What if you did something interesting enough or so unconventional that the local news mentioned it during their broadcast? Getting all your customers talking about your business or brand is good, but what if you could have everyone’s customers talking about your business?

There are many ways you could garner this kind of attention. What if you delivered toys or food to a charity dressed as Santa or a super hero? How about participating in a mud run or 5k sporting a crazy costume featuring your company name? What about creating a music video parody of a popular song, with lyrics relating to your business? You could interview people on the street with questions relating to your business, record answers to the questions and post the whole thing on YouTube! The possibilities are endless, the point is to be unconventional, unexpected, and exciting. Do something people will remember and people will talk about.

Be careful not to offend, but don’t expect to please everyone when you think outside the box. The main thing we have learned from Miss Cyrus: No press is really bad press.
