Delta Food Industries says it will start growing the tomatoes in March next year as part of its Sh1.63 billion ($16 million) investment in partnership with Milly Fruit Processors

The UAE firm plans to grow tomatoes on pilot basis for two years to inform the design of the planned processing plant.

Leading food manufacturing, processing and repacking company based in United Arab Emirates (UAE) has set eyes on the lucrative Kenyan agricultural market.

Speaking in Mombasa recently, Delta Food Industries Managing Director Shiraz Osman says the food processing firm, will venture with a local firm- Milly Fruit Processors to provide special seeds for proposed tomato paste plant in Kilifi County.

“We intend to start growing the tomatoes from March, investing about Sh1.63 billion ($16 million) on a two–year pilot process, expected to process about 500 tonnes of tomatoes daily. Kenyan tomatoes, especially those from Kilifi will no longer need to export to UAE because we will buy their produce from within and at competitive prices,” says Osman.

Speaking when he met with Milly Fruit Processors officials, Mr. Osman said farmers need to get right tomatoes seeds to deliver healthier, cleaner produce for consumers. “We will employ the latest solutions in agro-technology to enable customers to maximize tomato production, provide higher quality produce which can fetch higher prices.

Milly Fruit Processors director Mohamed Rashid said the project will ensure that farmers use only tested seeds, which can offer good yields. Mr Rashid says the fruit pulp and concentrate producer based in Mtwapa, Kenya, has been in business since 1980's. The company produces Picana range of pure juices.

Through the mutual, Delta Foods aims to diversify into growing African market, through leading brands like tomato paste, ketchup, milk powder and sauces. The food processor, according to Mr. Osman, has experienced staff and use state-of-the art technology to produce highest standard and reliable products. Delta Food Industries produces about 15,000 to 20,000 metric tons of concentrates a year and exports 250 containers of tomato-based products monthly.

The company, located in Saif Zone close to Sharjah International Airport, produces about 360,000-400,000 cartons per month. The factory is equipped with high technology and branded machinery from Italy, Iran and USA. “We offer delicious and nutritious food. Delta Food unites cultures and enriches daily life because we understand the power of food to connect people. Delta Food produces healthy convenient food for every eating occasion”, says Osman.
