Writing An Application Essay

An application essay is a very important aspect of your admission process. It can help a student with less than stellar scores get into the school they wish or the extraordinary student to be rejected. There are certain things you want to keep in mind when writing this so that it stands out.

Cut your essay down to the minimum. What are you trying to say and what do you need to project? Instead of being flamboyant and dramatic make it straight forward and concise.

An essay that is filled with "things", "aspects" or "stuff" it is going to end up in the pile marked "Rejections". Be precise in what "stuff" and explain exactly what you mean by "aspects". The greater the revision and the more clarity you bring to it the better.

Avoid the over use of "I". It's okay to use it but not to excess. If it is used several times in one sentence there is something wrong and it would be redone.

Be careful not to use too many adverbs or adjectives. Using too many can ruin what you are trying to do and make out like you are trying too hard to impress. You are better off using a strong verb.

Using too many of the most common verb "to be" will only take the energy out of your essay. Find other words to use.

Cliches have no place in this essay. It is much more effective without them and the reader will find the passage more interesting without them.

Becareful of digressing away from your chosen path. A good anecdote or cute little story may engage your reader but usually it adds nothing to your piece but a lot of extra words.

Make your piece gripping and precise by not using the passive voice very often if at all. Use proper nouns and emphasize the main object of the sentence. Don't use weak verbs like "there are" or "it is" and phrases like "it seems" for they are uninspiring and really don't do anything for the sentence.

Your grades have shown your intelligence and with a well chosen subject your essay can show your personality and reveal your true passions. With a well thought out narration about how you handled a difficult time in your life it can tell much more about your personality than a list of honors you have won.
