Think the Sales Are All About Black Friday? It’s All About Halloween!

As a photographer, you’re always going to be on the lookout for costumes, props, accessories, and added extras to make your shoots look as creative and professional, or even as kooky, as they can possibly be. These things all cost cash however, so it’s important to try and shop around a little, especially during sale times, to save some money. You might think that the best sales are after Thanksgiving or during Black Friday, and whilst that is certainly a good place to start, there is another event which can bring in plenty of bargains

After Halloween!

The days after that spooky event are basically an early Christmas present for photographers who want to stock up their dressing up box. If you have no idea where to start, be on the lookout for these useful and surprisingly adaptable items. The day after Halloween is the best time to head out, because this is when you’re going to get the best pick of what is remaining, without being stuck only with what has already been picked over! Always think ahead, and you’ll manage to stock up perfectly.

Costumes

Gone are the days when Halloween costumes were just about zombies and witches! Nowadays you can get some seriously realistic outfits for parties, including sports personalities, musical stars, professionals etc. After Halloween has been and gone, these are often slashed in price, and that is the best time to stock up on the outfits in which you can dress up your models for the next few months, or even further ahead. Avoid the Halloween masks of old, you’re very unlikely to find a use for these!

Accessories

It’s often the small things which make a huge difference in photos, and on your set you need to create the right setting. With that in mind, grab those hats, wigs, fake teeth etc, and keep them aside from a rainy day. Again, it’s about thinking creatively and trying to fit certain accessories into different situations, e.g. just because a wig was used as part of a witch’s outfit, it doesn’t mean you can’t use it as a tamed down wig for a different shoot, with a little hairdressing of course.

High quality make up

If you are careful with what you buy, you can grab some seriously money saving make up options here, because Halloween make up palettes and kits can nowadays be of the highest quality. This is a great opportunity to stock up on what can give your photos a real ‘pop’ of colour and drama.

Lights, plenty of lights!

As a photographer you will know that lighting is imperative, but it’s not always about artificial or natural light that really makes the photo dark or light, it’s often about drama too. With that in mind, grab those Halloween lanterns, or even a smoke machine, to add some serious mind-blowing effect to your stock photos, and get creative with them, perhaps even painting them different colours on the inside, for instance.

When you’re grabbing those bargains remember to think about different sizes, because you might need to dress up a child, a teenager, an adult, or even a dog at some point during the coming 12 months, and you’ll want something in that professional dressing up box which will fit them.

Remember to head online as well as to stores, but don’t go over the top! A bargain is not a bargain if you don’t really need it, that’s actually veering into the area of false economy. Stick to realism, and really think about the photos you might like to set up over the coming months. There are however certain things which never go out of use, such as fake blood for instance, so remember to stock up on that handy little extra!

Forget Black Friday, for the photography extras, it’s all about Halloween!
