When using social media as a marketing tool it can be extremely effective - done wrong and it can be a total flop

The Sins of Social Media

Social media is a must have network for today’s businesses, it is a way of gaining much interest in the form of thousands of followers or ‘friends’ who promote your business for you by ‘liking’ your page or sharing your links your business will be sent to every person in their address books, this massively extends your audience and costs you nothing financially or in resources. Once you have maintained a social media audience the trick then is to keep that audience. With so many online businesses and businesses having an online presence you don’t want to become one of many blended into a crowd posting the same mundane egotistic trivia which will eventually cause followers to delete you from their newsfeeds. You need to stand out, be engaging, interesting and unique. For this you must avoid the basic sins of social media such as;

Spamming - Spamming may seen a brilliantly quick and easy way of getting your business or products across consistently to prospective buyers, but continually posting your services and products will only obtain you one thing - your clientele massively reducing. Nobody wants to log on to their twitter or facebook accounts and see unlimited posts by one member all through their newsfeeds and a reaction will be to either delete you from their page or hide your posts, either way they won’t continue to see your posts and you’ve lost yourself a potential customer by being lazy with your marketing.

Boring literature - The idea of social media is that it is interesting and entertaining, to keep your name up there doesn't have to consist of 100% of your posts just concentrating on your business ideas, services or products. Tell the odd joke, share the odd picture - a picture of a director asleep at his desk, or a secretary secretly eating lunch for example these posts are funny and will instantly humanise your business to your followers, once you are humanised that is when loyalties are created. Funny pictures and posts are more popularly liked and shared too so therefore appear in other people's newsfeeds, expanding your audience to a much wider number and causing more interest and curiosity.

Not interacting - So you have decided to branch into social media for your advertising, therefore it is essential you use it correctly. If people post to you, endeavour to reply. You may not be interested in their opinions or have the time to answer a long string of questions but their post will be public as will your lack of response which won’t do much for your image.
