Cloud computing is creating a revolution. IBM is playing a major role in this area by providing solutions development and testing teams.

IBM and cloud computing

Cloud computing is gaining enormous popularity among IT managers of organizations all over the world. IBM, a reputed brand in the IT (Information Technology) industry, is helping its customers excel in cloud computing. IBM's reliable SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service) and IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) solutions are helping organizations increase their efficiency.

The objective of the development team is to add value to the business by creating high quality software applications. Cost, agility and quality are other important factors in the minds of the application development managers. Cloud computing enables them to access resources (developers need to speed application delivery) at a reasonable cost. Cloud is addressing variable demand requirements development and testing teams effectively.

Public cloud computing addresses development and test IT resource needs of organizations. It comes with virtualized delivery model. Its "pay-as-you-go" feature avoids unnecessary expenses. Cost of ownership is low. "We evaluated many options which included in-house, hosted and cloud-based alternatives and we found that apart from cloud, some of them were too expensive and would require hiring additional staff", says an IT manager from a large organization in Germany.

Another important characteristic of public cloud is its scalable cloud delivery. This helps organizations extend their development and test functions when required. An IT manager in the U.S. says, "We needed a scalable system that replaced the limitations of existing system".

Ease of implementation of cloud development and test services is one of the main reasons why customers are investing in it. An IT manager from India says, "We had specific requirements based on budget and the total implementation time, as our business cannot afford to lose time upgrading the system".

According to a research study conducted by TBR, cloud development and test service offerings fall into three basic use cases. They are:

1) Proprietary cloud infrastructure: This focuses on pure cloud deployment, which is not portable to other environments.

2) Raw cloud capacity: This offers the cloud environment. But the customers have to operationalize development and test using their own tools and knowledgebase.

3) Full-service open cloud platforms: They offer everything (IT capacity, tools and processes) customers may need to support development and test functions.

Cloud computing will have a revolutionary impact on business and society. IBM is playing a major role in this space. IBM's SmartCloud offers instant-on access to development tools, broad deployment options and flexible licensing options. It is hugely popular among CIOs.
