How to Write Several Articles From a Single Idea

Some freelancers shun the idea of writing many articles from one idea, but this makes sense. Firstly, internet readers have short attention spans and secondly, writers earn more money the more articles they produce whether they get an upfront payment per article or they are paid via page views. Therefore it is not only prudent to learn to write several articles out of a single idea, it is also smart. There are ways you can generate new articles, using your existing content as the fuel.

Break Your Idea into Smaller Parts

You may have started to tackle a big subject area in an old article but internet readers prefer to have their information broken up into smaller bits. That way it’s easier to digest and there are natural breaking points to bookmark the bits that may be particularly useful. You can use your old article to freshen up your content and create an entirely new series of articles by using your subheadings as new topics. This strategy ironically increases the chances that your entire series will be read and you also get to maximize your page views because you have split one long article into several shorter ones.

Practice Mind Mapping

This is a popular technique for freelance writers and bloggers because it helps ideas to flow freely. To mind map your old articles you simply need to jot down your old titles. You can start with five to ten old articles and then using one at a time, brainstorm additional directions to take the topic. This method can usually produce quite a few new ideas.

See What Others are Saying

To come up with new ideas, it is often useful to find out what others are saying on the topic. Do a simple search for your topic using pertinent keywords and see what you come up with. You may come across an article that you can rewrite using your own slant or something that you may agree with but you can write to a better standard.

Talk to Friends and Family

Finally, sometimes it helps to bring it into the real world. Ask your friends and family for ideas by letting them know what your main topic area is about. They may be able to give you a few ideas that have escaped you thus far. Sometimes simply getting a different perspective can help you to shake things up enough to get back behind the keyboard.

Freelance writers constantly need to come up with fresh content. If you write on a fairly small niche you may experience periods of drought when your ideas seem to shrivel up and vanish. This is fairly normal so you should not be alarmed, although feeling like you’ve run out of things to write about can be a frightening thought when it’s what puts the food on the table. Your safety net should be the thought that you can always use your existing portfolio as a springboard to find new article ideas out of your existing ones.

As long as each article is full and complete it is okay but there is nothing worse for a reader than to be cheated and offered only a short article and told to "click here to read the rest" and so forth. Not every topic is big enough to have parts, but you can have related articles for sure.

One further thought for you and that is that you could take the opposite viewpoint. We tend to focus on why we should do something one particular way - you could therefore explore an alternative way and look at the advantages or obstacles that approach may bring.

I go for the smaller bits myself, covering a narrower topic rather than rambling on for the whole scene. Great ideas here and welcome to Wiki!
