Many sites in the world of online freelance writing offer writing contests where writers can submit articles to be considered for prizes. There are several ways you can make sure that your entry catches a judges eye.

Read All Instructions- And Follow Them!

Online writing contests are designed to draw visitors to the website, promote writers and essentially be a win/win situation for the site and the writers. Each site will have their own list of requirements and rules for the contest, entries which don't follow the rules are usually disqualified.

When you find out about a contest, if you are anything like me you get excited. You start thinking about the subject you will write and what you could do with your prize. (Many writing contests offer cash prizes). But it is important that you take the time to read all the instructions provided before you even begin to think about your piece. Make sure that you can comply with the rules of the contest and can submit a real 100% effort on the article that you are submitting.

For example: Contest rules may state that all entries must be in email form- plain text, not attachments. This is an important part of the requirements that if you don't pay attention, your submission won't even be considered.

Don't waste your time or the time of the contest host by not submitting as requested.

Format Your Submission

When it comes to the format and layout of your submission it is important to follow the guidelines for submissions, but if there are none concerning formatting, then take the opportunity to really let your piece shine.

Use section headings in bold, insert numbers or bullets for any lists included in your submission, and clearly define paragraphs. Show the judges that you really understand the way an internet readers' attention is gained and kept.

Proofread, Proofread, Proofread

I can't emphasize enough how important it is to proofread your submission. Forwards, backward, aloud, and even having someone else read it before you submit can make the difference between a winning article and a losing article.

Before you submit your piece you should make sure that your spelling and grammar are correct, that there are no typos and that all punctuation is correct. It is also important to make sure that your article flows nicely from one thought to another, a choppy article linked together with section headings usually won't win a contest. So get your thoughts in order before you write, evaluate as you write, and correct as you proofread to achieve your best effort.

This is so true. I won a Pulitzer contest in 2008 on "How concerned should Americans be about HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean?" It was the highlight of my short writing career. The best advice I can give is know your subject, research, research, research until you can see it in your sleep. This will give a more smooth writing voice in your article. Edit, and proofread. over and over again. It took me a week before I was satisfied with what I've written. The reward was I won in a prestigious writing contest; the Pulitzer Center Citizen Journalist Award. If I can do that in my corner of the kitchen, anyone can with a little effort:)
Great article with useful info. Suzalicie :)
