In 2012 Google launched a yearlong campaign to get Welsh businesses online, along with the Get British Businesses Online campaign. With the internet economy representing 8% of the UK GDP, the campaign aims to highlight the importance of having an online presence and helps small company’s access new markets. The Welsh campaign is most interesting as figures from 2012 showed 40% of small businesses had no website at all, lagging far behind the rest of the UK.

Get Online

Let’s face it, you don’t look at Wales and assume there is loads going on in terms of business. But Wales is a big place with cities like Cardiff and many small towns and villages such as Newtown. 33% of Welsh businesses have access to sell goods and services online compared to the UK average of 39%, showing a massive opportunity for the Welsh economy. Getting online is even more important for those in rural areas with small populations, and with Google claiming SME’s online can grow four times faster than those not online, if you’re not there you’re seriously missing out.

Get a Website

No matter where you are in the world, you can get a website. Even those rural areas of Wales you may not have heard of. You can get web design in Wrexham in Wales, or you can outsource your web design in India. What is most important when designing and building your website is that you’re happy with it, it represents your brand and services well and it entices customers to convert. It’s all very well telling businesses to get a website but there are other factors that influence the success of a website.

Get SEO Advice

The basic advantages of having a website simply aren’t enough in today’s competitive internet economy. There are many companies optimising their site to rank higher in Google, get more traffic and convert users. I know small businesses are doing a lot by just getting online but seeking some SEO advice can really help your understanding of how search engines work and how users find you.

The power of the internet is undeniable and the opportunity for small businesses is there, they just need to utilise it. The internet’s contribution to the economy is growing by 10% each year in the UK and it’s exciting for all those selling online. If you’re a small to medium business that has a service or product to sell online and you still don’t have a website, please consider getting one and stop living in the dark ages.
