Earning Money Through Writing

This is an old article, from several years ago and I will update it as well as I can. I will try to chronicle my writing history in this article going back to probably 2007. I hope I am a little wiser today,

Before I got paid back in 2007

I have been meaning to update you all on what has been happening in my life for awhile now and it just seems that the story got pushed back in favour other things. So guys, here is the update. I am not pushing it back any longer.

We will go back to February 2006 where I was so pissed off with Gather admin that I made my decision to stop spending so much time here. I did not get any compensation for participating in Gather. I do not get any money or gift certificates from gather because I am not American. Only Americans get these perks at this time. Furthermore there is no where in the B agreement that only Americans are paid and that is false advertising (since the writing of this piece in 2007 the stipulation has now been written into the Gather agreement).

Several Gather members offered suggestions such as having an American gather member get the certificates for me and then send them on, or sell them on ebay for a loss etc. Although everyone's heart was in the right place, it is gathers responsibility to step up their act. I should not have to take a loss and be treated like a second class citizen.

A second reason for leaving Gather was because the money had attracted me to Gather in the first place. I was sick and out of work and not able to find full time employment. I was actually one step away from being homeless every month and I have to be online to make money. Playing on Gather wasn't helping any.

One wonderful male friend I made on Gather helped me out financially and I will always be indebted to him. However it is an ongoing battle for me back then and even at this time to make ends meet.

So back in February 2007, I decided that I needed to leave Gather and make money. I did agree to keep up the birthday club as I did not want to spite my friends at Gather because of the organization; that just would not be right.

Note: I ran a birthday club where I made a big thing for everyone’s birthday on Gather.com. I let that go when I quit Gather.com for good.

Looking back on this article at this time in 2015 I cannot fathomed why I spent so much time on Gather.com, thinking that one day they would pay me like they said they would. I have learned a lot I hope over the years.

Mylot

So I started spending my time on mylot and other blogs where they do pay internationals. One thing I needed though was a paypal account and I tried to set one up, the story is too long to tell if you are unfamiliar with it but trust me it was a horror. My bank kept sending back all the paypal deposits yet claiming there was no problem. Meanwhile, I couldn't get my money out of paypal and neither institution would accept responsibility. I was on the phone everyday with the bank and paypal.

Eventually the bank said they could do nothing and paypal closed the bank account and I was left without a way to get my money from paypal. I had to take the situation outside of the bank to the ombudsman office where they sent me right back to another division of the Bank. At least after a month and a half, this department was able to get to the bottom of the problem. They determined that the bank account encoding was wrong and had caused a computer breakdown. This mess is now cleared up and I have a functioning paypal account. You can read the full story here.

I was making some extra money on mylot, and I was selling my stories: An online magazine had picked up three of my stories and has paid me $300.00 for them. I planned on continuing to work with them to supplement my income. I have sold two other stories to two other places as well.

After Mylot

I was very happy making extra money from online magazines. I also met new friends who were writers as well. One of my new friends introduced me to Associated Content. I began a database there which I have been building over the years. Associated Content became Yahoo Voices and I also was a featured psychology writer from them. They had different rules from Canadians, and I could only get paid after making one hundred dollars which took several months. My friend was luckier she was making about 250 dollars a month before they closed down.

I was also writing for Examiner.com and I still send the occasional article there. My main source of payment was from freelance writing. I did the freelancing for many years and made decent money while still using various blog sites. Of course blogging does not pay as much but I continued with the sites as well. I worked until I burnt out not once but twice. I had no choice but to quit doing that kind of work.

I stumbled upon Bubblews.com after that and I was so happy they paid very well. However, the bubble burst and they found due to plagiarism, cheats on the system, and an overpayment to all bloggers that they just could not remain sustainable that way. They reduced their payout. We were all disappointed of course but that is the life of bloggers and freelance writers.

Now I am here on Wikinut building up my database once again and working other places as well.

The lesson in all this is that if you have a passion to write you will!

You sure are getting to know ombudsman aren't you? I didn't know Gather existed until after Mylot. Wasn't on it very long before it went down.

Interesting history Carol.

I had never heard of some of the sites you mentioned either. I tried Helium.com, but the air has gone out of their balloon now too.

I heard about myLot, but I was too late to take part of it. Glad to know your online activities.

Thanks Carol for sharing your experiences with writing sites. I am always curious to read about them!

I was happy with Associated Content though I knew I would not get paid being a non US-resident. But over time and with Yahoo taking over, I felt it was not fair and I switched to Wikinut though I was also with Bukisa for a while. Though my earnings are on the lower side, I hope it will rise over time. I know I have to promote more to get wider coverage to my posts.

Yes, for me writing is more of a passion to share my thoughts and feelings. I cannot take a cent from "here" but hopefully my posts will live after me; that thought motivates me - siva

Paypal is supportive. I can say that from my personal experience. The bank is to be blamed in your case as you've rightly pointed out.
Well, did you try Listverse or Top Tenz? They pay you real good. I have received $900 so far from Top Tenz and $1200 from Listverse.

I am currently converting from Bubblews to Wikinut, as well. I've also written for the now defunct Helium and for Demand Media, which recently decide an aeronautical engineer is no longer a qualified science writer. Go figure.

Kilted it is just incredible how all these sites are going under. I don't know if there is going to be any sites for us in the future.

I AM passionate about writing! With limited education however, I have only any talent that I may have been born with. Anything else I have learned from other writers. I made a little money on MyLot but the site no longer pays. I like wikinut but would be interested in other sites. Your comments are much appreciated. Blessings.
