Different Places I Have Worked

Nobody needs an explanation of what work is, we all know what it is. So I decided I would list the work I have done in my life

Volunteer work

Volunteer work

In terms of volunteer work, I have served on the PTA, was the secretary for the parent’s committee at my son’s elementary school. and then again at his high school. I went to all the outings during his elementary years and served as a monitor for the children. I was the volunteer parent to replace the librarian on the days she was not at the school. I would not only check books in and out. I put up displays and read stories to the younger children.

Advocacy

I also became an advocate for the parents of juveniles in the social service system. This was a challenging job which required that I understood the law pertaining to juveniles and acted as a go between the parent and the system when parent’s had concerns. Sometimes it was issues concerning how the parent did not understand the system, or they refused to comply with the ruling, or they had legitimate complaints that had to be dealt with.

When they got nowhere with the social service agency they exercised their legal right to have an advocate who was often required to break through the red tape and get their concerns addressed.

Paid work

Now for paid work Unlike most teenage girls I never babysat. I just was not that comfortable at the time to be around younger children.

My first official job was when I was 17. I stuffed pantyhose into the packaging for a company called Pretty Polly. That job lasted two months (the summer) and then I went to work in another factory, This factory assembled various types of locks for doors and windows. I sat there all day connecting nuts and bolts into a cylinder. I hated that job. I knew that factory work would never be for me.

After I left there I worked as a clerk in a general insurance company but I hated it. I was too used to life insurance. I then went on to various secretarial jobs before I went back to university to get my degrees in psychology. After I finished university with a master’s degree in counselling (Canadian spelling) psychology I worked as therapist in the mental hospital dealing with clients who suffered from schizophrenia. When times were hard I worked in various telemarketing firms which eventually stressed me out so much that I got sick mentally and I also began to get sick physically as well.

I went on temporary disability and then on permanent disability. I still work at home writing to be able to help me pay my bills each month. I don’t think I will ever stop working. I have to keep my mind alert and I love to write, I love to share my therapeutic experiences, and I love to research and continually learn new things. I will work and be a student of life as long as I am physically and mentally able.

Have you ever taken a look at your life and jotted down the various jobs you have had over the years?

HI, I read it and this was sort of helping and scary at the same time.Helping cause blog made it pretty clear that work is the most essential thing that can make our existence meaningful and scary cause after reading this I questioned myself that how many sectors i have served to? I don't have track of most of my time that i had wasted in this planet which means nothing was productive. But i am working on it and eventually will make every moment count. Thank you so much for putting this on our screen and we are grateful.

Such a colorful work history. I would have gone crazy stuffing pantyhose into packaging all day long. I too have held a variety of jobs since I was old enough to work. My first official job was bus girl at a Japanese restaurant in Oregon.

My first paid work was as a temporary postman during the Christmas run-up - I was still at school at the time. I discovered that if you didn't rush too much, or if you helped a colleague to finish their round after you had finished yours, you were paid overtime!

It has not been easy for you Carol.

I have been in the accounts and finance area all my working life. It was not exciting but I comfort myself that accountants are first to be hired and last to be fired! siva

You should visit the website freedom from writing. There are some magazines that pay 10 cents a word. Since you have a Masters in Psychology you'll find your niche in those magazines and good money.
