We start off still inteh elecrricalbusiness but due to health he had to change to something not so physical

Making Customers Happy

Once while wiring an old house my dad and the lady of the house got into a heated discussion. The problem was that we made a mess on her floors and she wanted us to clean it up. When ever you are working with wood and plaster and you have to make holes in it to install the receptacles and switches you create a mess, wood chips and piles of broken plaster.

We were done and gathering up our tools and excess parts so we could go home ,there was some trash on the floor and she thought we should clean it up. I guess the lady was bugging my dad the whole job and this was the last straw, when she told him to clean her floor he said to her, “ OK, if you want to pay me $12.00 per hour ( the going rate 60 years a go) to sweep your floor give me the broom”, then she really got mad, so we quickly made our exit.

You want to remember that was sixty years ago and $12.00 an hour was high wages. But of course now you can't get any one to work for that rate of pay.

Learning Lessons of Life

I was still in high school at the time and working part time for my dad learning the electrical business. Dad was trying to get more business so he started advertising in the local paper called “The Union” about his electrical service. He put some very effective ads in the paper, but I was embarrassed because he used my name. The ads were geared toward telling people what to do, they said “Joe says,Get you new light fixtures from Cox Electric”. The funny thing is no matter what I thought they worked, and he sold a lot of light fixtures or whatever it was the ads told people to buy.

That taught me an important lesson and that is “ It pays to advertise”.

Then later on the electrical work was slowing down and it was pretty hard work, he decided to go into selling real estate, so again he studied and passed the state exams and became a licensed realtor. That was another lesson learned, that you can do anything you set out to do, as long as you put your mind to it and keep on track. Hard work pays off in the end, sometimes while you are doing it you wonder if you will ever finish and if it really will pay off. But in the end it always pays to keep on track.
