Google Trends features comparative charts of the popularity of keyword phrases and provides information on search volume data. This means how many users how much are interested in a particular topic based on the keyword search that is introduced over a given period of time.

Introduction

Google Trends is a useful tool used to view comparative search volumes and seasonal trends. Users can use relative volume trend charts to evaluate their marketing campaigns over the last two years by comparing up to five keyword phrases and using extensive keyword volume. In that way, Google Trends pulls up search volume data and compares trends that would otherwise be tracked through obsolete web analytics tools.

Google Trends Evaluates the Popularity of Keywords

Google Trends features comparative charts of the popularity of keyword phrases and provides information on search volume data. This means how many users how much are interested in a particular topic based on the keyword search that is introduced over a given period of time. In that way, companies can gain a great insight on consumer behavior and understand what drives consumers toward particular products and services or industries and sectors based on the historical data provided by Google Trends.

Google Trends Evaluates Consumer Behavior

Consumer behavior can be evaluated through proper assessment of search trend data. For instance, when important corporate events attract consumer interest, the search volume graphs on keywords related to those events are demonstrated with big spikes on Google Trends around the time that the events occur. Human behavior can also be assessed. For instance, keywords for celebrities can give an indication about which celebrities are really preferred by the majority of people over a given period of time. Similarly, users of Google Trends can know which events are popular and significant when they occur.

Besides, Google Trends features geographical comparisons as well by providing regional information. This can help companies direct their marketing efforts based on regional data and target consumers more effectively.

Google Trends Pitfalls

On the other hand, Google Trends have their pitfalls as well. One main disadvantage is that it lacks a feature to penetrate on exact matches. This means that users should search for multiple keyword phrases and search for synonyms as well or similar phrases. If they base their search on a single keyword phrase, the trend line will not be comparable. A useful tool is Google’s Traffic Estimator that reduces unfortunate keyword choices and analyzes exact matches.

Another pitfall of Google Trends is that it includes also trends for keywords that have low traffic volumes. This means that it returns results on data that contain the keyword phrase but also on keywords contained randomly in phrases. In other words, Google Trends is based on broad matching keyword and therefore, it needs detailed analysis to decide if it suits the marketing goals of a particular company.

Some Useful Tips for Using Google Trends

To achieve optimum results when using Google Trends, it is advisable to separate keyword phrases with a comma, a vertical bar or parentheses. In doing so, the return results will be based on the exact match of the keyword and not on the broad match, thus excluding low traffic volume keywords. It is also advisable to use quotation marks so that Google Trends searches keywords in the specific order that users have entered them.
