9 Steps that’ll make sure your Grooming and Wellness Business is a Super-Hit!

This article will enable you as an entrepreneur to have a clear understanding of the steps that are involved in establishing your own Beauty and Wellness Business. This is a follow up to the earlier article on the Steps to take before the ‘Steps to Start your own Business’.

Step 1: Study and visit different businesses to see what kind interests you!
The Wellness & Beauty industry is enormous, it doesn’t just revolve around haircuts, spas and manicures, it is way more than that. Moreover, it is a profession that involves mastering the skill. If you think you can run a hair salon without actually knowing anything about it, that’s just ridiculous! So first, you need to see that your creativity and skill set suit which kind of wellness and beauty business and whether you are capable of doing it. Once that decision has been made ask yourself the important questions:
o I love to apply makeup, but can I do it 40 hours a week?
o Do I see myself catering to personal needs of others?
o Can I deal with the fact that I may have to put in maximum hours and effort and still earn the bare minimum for the first few years?
o Etc….
These kinds of questions may put across the most extreme scenarios but they will make your mindset business-ready! For example, MadOWat hair salon owned by the renowned Sapna Bhavnani is famously known as the Hair Temple only because she has taken a simple hair salon concept and transformed it into an art full desire. That’s the kind of loyalty you can get when you’re truly dedicated to what you love doing. Now this kind of commitment is not possible if she was not passionate about it.
Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the business
There is always something new in the Beauty and Wellness Industry, therefore apart from learning and polishing your skills, it is important to keep up with the changing trends. This can be done a few ways:
o Subscribe to Industry related magazines like Style Speak
o Keep up with consumer magazines to see what is in demand. If you’re a beauty parlour, go for magazines like Glamstar (depending on your target market)
o Find and engage on social media groups and chats
o Hunt through related websites, blogs, newspapers, videos etc
o Talk to your customer, visit salons and just casually interact with the customers there
o Network with people in the industry
o Attend industry seminars
o Observe your customers
o Track trends in your own business
Step 3: Study the law, regulations and finance related to the business
As a small business owner, you must have a general understanding of the legal aspects of running a business. An entrepreneur must understand the rules for doing business in India are different from the rules for business in another country. A small business owner must ensure that they review and study the local rules and regulations specific to the Beauty and Wellness Industry before actually setting up.
Here are a few things to consider before conducting business:
o Have a general understanding of the rules and regulations of doing business in India
o Ensure that you have the proper licenses and paperwork needed to conduct business
o It is good to hire a local business attorney, to ensure that you are not violating any laws or committing any illegal activities.
As an entrepreneur, you do not have to have a Master’s in Business, but it is advisable to take some business courses. This will ensure that you, as a small business owner, have some knowledge of what it takes to run a successful business. Check if the following are applicable to you:
o Shops and Establishments Act
o Workers Sanitation Law
o Other Labour Laws
o Any other specific beauty / fitness laws
Step 4: Design an exclusive business plan
As a start-up, execution is everything. That means you have to set priorities, establish goals, and measure performance. You also need to identify the key questions to answer, like “What features do customers really want?” etc. A business plan helps you design this game-plan and…
o Set specific objectives for managers to follow
o Set a plan to raise capital
o Make sure everyone’s on the same page
o Avoid big mistakes
o Etc… There are many advantages to having a well chalked out Business Plan!
Step 5: Rehabilitation, location and state permits

Apart from the legal aspects ascertaining the location, the actual location should be apt. it is essential to invest in a location that gives direct visibility and acts as an added advantage to your business’ marketing. The Wellness and Beauty Industry has many players which means many competitors for you, this is when your location becomes your USP . Another pointer to remember is to integrate your location information with other forms of marketing to have a more 360 degree approach.
Step 6: Hire a consultant
A consultant specific to beauty and wellness setups, not particularly a stylist, is someone who can provide you with expertise for many business decisions. They can be anything from a sounding board to your project leader. Whatever your requirements, there is expertise available, locally or globally. They are an important part of the business culture. Your startup can reap some strong benefits from hiring a consultant:
o You only pay when you actually use the consultant and you incur no overhead costs, such as providing benefits, a computer or a work-space
o They provide an objective perspective and form an easy source of the required knowledge and information
o They help with solutions to specific challenges and situations
o Help validate ideas as well as facilitate, create and implement methodologies that enhance efficiency in the organization
o You can access their network of business or government contacts, bring in an experienced “outsiders” evaluation and point of view
o Understand how to present, teach or implement “new” business ideas and procedures
Step 7: Opening the Store
o Where Will Your Inventory Come From?
Do you have a supplier identified? Consider how many of the products are required for the smooth running of your wellness and Beauty business, and how reliable potential suppliers are.
o Who Will You Hire?
Finding the right employees for your wellness and Beauty business is an important element of the company’s long-term outlook for success as the venture will depend on their skill and expertise. Do you have access to a viable pool of potential employees? How will you select workers, and what will you offer in terms of salary and benefits?
o How Much Money Do You Need?
o How Much Money Do You Have?
Once you know your financial needs, consider your available resources. If you don’t have cash or investors lined up, you will have to research business loans, prepare a detailed business plan and apply for funding.
o How should you furnish your store?
Giving your store the right look and feel is important for customer satisfaction. Do not go with just being clean and tidy, though that is of most importance, but give equal importance to the wall paint, the chairs and beds, the linen, the staff uniforms, the furniture, the decor etc. This helps you differentiate from your competitors because your client are looking for a complete experience when they come to your outlet.
Step 8: Have an active Social Media
When used effectively, social media can have all the benefits of word of mouth, just on a larger scale! It can also help you reach a high number of potential customers. You may also register on websites that display your details for free and increase your SEO ranking, such as The Chairr.
Potential advantages of social media were covered in one of our previous articles on why your salon should be online you can find on the blog.
o Reduced marketing costs
o Increased sales
o Increased traffic to your website, which means more recognition
o Improved ranking on search engines
o Greater customer engagement, which means more recall value
o Greater access to international markets (if required)
o Opportunity for customer feedback and conduct market research
o Improved networking opportunities with customers and other businesses
Step 9: Keep yourself updated
It is important to keep yourself updated about evolving industry trends by using the mediums mentioned in Step 2 or by attending forums. Networking is also key in creating goodwill and valuable contacts. If you send someone to a conference and they learn and network and create content, then that’s great. But, to truly make it valuable, they’ve got to bring all that back and share it with all the folks who didn’t get to go to the conference, but could benefit from the good stuff!
Happy Business-ing!
