If you want to work remotely then you will need some of these tools to make it happen.


Now, more than ever, companies have started providing great perks for their employees. Some give away bonuses, other pay for your vacation, but there are also those that give you the option to work from home. For instance, you could have an in-house position with the possibility to work from home from time to time, or maybe you could work as a freelancer.

Either way, you do not have to be confined to a cubicle or a loud office. And this is great, since working remotely has certain benefits, like choosing your optimal work environment, such as a café or out in nature. However, before you ask your boss to work from home, there are some things you need to set up in order to be able to actually work.

Set up a VPN

If you have a main computer at work, which contains all the important information you need, then creating a private, secure VPN network is a must. Not only would it enable ease of access, but it would also provide you with a secure connection in case you are connected to a public WiFi. This is especially important because it protects you from any outsiders who could hack or steal any company data.

Usually, the VPN is already created by the company; however, if it is not, you could easily do it on your own. Of course, you would need some kind of VPN software, so make sure you pick wisely. Once you set everything up, just connect your laptop and company computer, and you will be ready to go.

Create cloud storage

Other than needing a private connection, you would also need somewhere to save your work. The best option for this would be a cloud storage server, like Google Drive or Dropbox. Of course, you could also save the files on your laptop. However, having copies online gives you the chance to access them from anywhere, at any time and from any device, which is perfect if you work on several computers. Even better, these services come with more than enough free storage, but you could also pay for additional storage, and it comes at a cheap price.

Create a Skype account or get a messenger app

It’s fairly easy to work remotely. You just need a productive space and a solid internet connection. However, in order to stay connected with your boss and co-workers, you would need a way to communicate with them. The default way would be via Skype. It has options for both messaging and video calls, which is convenient for business people.

Nevertheless, not every company goes with this choice. Some mostly use emails, or messenger apps. If your primary choice is email, then you could also check out apps that allow you to schedule when to send emails, or to priorities certain contacts. This would greatly help with your time management. For instance, you could schedule announcements to be automatically sent every day, so you wouldn’t have to do it manually and lose precious time.

Get a to-do list and a project management software

In order to be on track with your tasks, you should have a to-do list that would serve as a guide for each work day. These lists are great for busy people, who have a strict work schedule. Moreover, if your superior assigns you weekly or daily tasks, the best option would be to have a software solution through which you could do this.

For example, if you work away from the office, and you cannot personally talk about the daily projects, your company could use Basecamp (or any other project management software). This is a great program for creating and leading projects, as each employee would be given access and instructions for the things they need to do. The interface is clear and easy to navigate, which is great. With it, you would know exactly what your obligations are and what other team members are doing, without having to ask anyone.
