Quotations are like nuggets of gold to the soul. In this article, the benefits of quotations is described. Citing five of the many quotes from the book "Manhood 101" by Edwin Louis Cole, the author wish to share how these quotations can benefit anyone to achieve success in their career.
In a previous book review, “Ten Powerful Phrases for Positive People “, I mentioned the author shared that the ten (10) phrases in the book to teach us to positively communicate with those around us, either co-workers or family.
As I reflect further, these ten phrases also remind me of the many quotations that I have read through many books and articles over the years and how these quotations have helped me in my career.
In this article, I share with you just my five of the hundred or so quotations from Edwin Louis Cole’s book "Manhood 101" and how each helped me psyched myself at work, and hope that in a similar manner, you could also look towards quotations (maybe you have your own favorites or you can start with these five) to help you along as well. The five quotations I am choosing is aimed at those of us who are working with people in a work environment, which can be pretty harsh sometimes. If you want to succeed, I believe these five quotations will come in useful. I am presenting the quotation as a count-down:
Number #5: Communication- Impatience is the tool of the flesh. Misunderstanding is the tool of the devil.
All of us depend on others to either help or collaborate with us to get the job done. Sometimes, communication can be the key to breaking relationships between co-workers. It is apt to remember patience is the key to understand the point of view of the other person, and many a times impatience have caused serious and sometimes unrepairable drift through misunderstanding amongst colleagues. This quote should remind us to be patient as we also wish for others to be patient with us.
Number #4: Perseverance- You don’t make a success in life by concentrating on your weaknesses, but by going to your strengths.
Rome isn’t built in a day. No, not even with internet time will you find anyone whose success online is instant. In order to succeed, we need to persevere. We need to work our strengths while understanding our weakness so we know our limits. We should in fact regularly test our limits (in terms of stretching if our weakness can be made slowly strengthened). The bible also reminds us in James 1:4 “Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (NIV)
Number #3: Self Sabotage- One of the most powerful things you can do is to create an image. The next most powerful is to destroy it.
Our ability to hold a positive image of the outcome can affect how we move towards our goal. If we create a strong end goal in mind and work towards it, with perseverance, there is a high probability we will reach our goal. We are always reminded that a good head-start is half a battle won. We must not let self-doubt or the negative opinion of others drag us down. If we do, we would have lost half the battle or maybe even the war.
Number #2: Success- Responsibilities for success depends on the willingness to be responsible for failure.
No individual who is preparing for success should shirk away from responsibilities, especially if you are in a position of authority over fellow co-workers. Jesus himself said , Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. ( Luke 16:10)
Number #1: Leadership- You are only qualified to lead to the degree you are willing to serve.
And finally, when you think you got it all, success and a leadership position. Just when you thought you could call upon others to serve you, this quote should come in handy to keep you humble. You have shown to be willing to take responsibility, what about serving? If you don’t serve the interests of those working for you, how could you expect them to reciprocate in kind?
These are just five of the 101 quotations that Edwin Louis Cole penned in his book, ”Manhood 101“, so you might want to browse through at the library or grab your copy of the book to inspire you. Although the book is quite dated, the principles that can be applied in our lives are not. I hope this article has been helpful to you in your career and I wish you every success.
