Starting an online business is a challenge, but there are parts of this that a new website owner must remember to make money online with a new business. There are many sites, which will “tell” you how to make money fast, or better yet, how to build your business in three days so that you will never have to work a day job ever again.

It is somewhat like the road to El Dorado. However, not quite, think of it this way, the people who heard about it and tried to follow the legends and myths never found it, but others follow a path that while did not lead them to quick riches, still allowed them to build their wealth. Over time, these people became successful and had their own “gold.”

Yes, we all would love to work from home, but even then it is "work" from home, and that means a business. Welcome to your new day job!

The Basics and a Definition

The basics are important; you have started an online business with the goal of making a profit with the next year or so. Now, this is a good goal, but you have to factor a lot of information in. Some people do make money with Google AdSense, or Amazon or even many other affiliate programs, yet the key to making a profit is focus.

A good working definition of profit for starting your online business is this: If you make anything above what you have spent in both time and money, then you have made a profit. All else is making money online, it is not increasing your profits.

The choice of focus is yours. You can focus on making money or you can focus on making a profit. You can finish one part and then go on to the next, but never lose sight of what is important, your business, and your passion for your work.

The best way to think is to focus on what makes you a profit. For example, some people use both Google AdWords and AdSense. They will talk about how they make money. In this business, online especially, most new website owners do not think about what makes them a profit. You can spend $50 a day on AdWords, only to make one dollar. That is the nature of this business. This is neither making money, nor is it making a profit, this is the definition of insanity.

A smart more focused way will be to look at your stats from say Google Analytics, or any other analytics tool, and find out what works for you website. Most, if not all need links, more than they need traffic. The more links you have going to your business, the more likely you will make money with this start-up.

Focus? What Do you Mean?

Again, do not simply focus on link building, but rather also focus on the appearance of your blog or website and on what the people need to find on your work. A strong following is one thing, but people who make money also focus on the good things, the power of their message and the types of traffic who come to their sites.

What makes a good business is this: Have great content people read, then a link, and another link, and then build your keywords and SEO, and then begin to foucs on making money, without losing your foundation.

To go and build your business means building traffic and making good earnings on your investment of time. This is a smart and effective way of building your business. Again, a business is by definition something, which you can make money from, but also should be one that you can make an increasing profit with over the years.
