Pre-press:

Pre-press includes design and color separation. The design is done using commercial software such as Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign or their opensource counterparts Gimp, Inkscape and Scribus.

The design is then outputted from the computer to film (CTF) or directly on the photo sensitized plate (CTP).

I suggest to use CTF for simple designs with minimal or no color separation involved. This is best for single color jobs such as receipt printing.

CTP is best to use for magazines, flyers, brochures and other printing jobs that demand higher quality print and higher resolutions.

Press:

For CTF, the film is then given to the printing press for further processing. They will bake the image into a photo sensitized or PS plate or on a wipe-on plate (a recycled PS plate).

For CTP, the plate is immediately loaded into the printing machine such as a Heidelberg or a Solna for German brands and an Akiyama or a Hamada for Japanese brands.

The machine operator then proceeds to print using the plate.

Post-press:

After printing, the paper may or may not undergo a series of post-press processes sometimes called finishing. The most common type of finishing is cutting the paper to actual size of flyers or brochures. Next most common is folding such as folding a brochure into three folds.

There are also different types of binding, lamination, embossing etc. that the printed paper can undergo before it is finally packed and delivered to the client.
