People you should Never Hire and the reasons why; vital information
Overview
There are people who cost companies bags of money. They may do it by unworking, by having and/or causing accidents, by walking off the job; the list can go on and on.
These are people who should never be hired.
Hindsight is 20/20, and this article is to give you that glimpse of mistakes you don't have to make.
The Walk Out
It is always wise to set the final interview more of a psychodrama then dry questions and rote answers. You need to know how the potential employee reacts to situations.
The right questions can get very illuminating answers and will expose one of worst people who can be hired; the one who just walks off the job.
Resignations are properly done with warnings and notice. This allows the company to prepare and to make the transition as smoothly as possible.
There are others who decide they are going to resign and walk out, as if they have no obligation to anyone or anything.
This is the height of irresponsibility and it is better not to hire someone like this to fill any post, even taking out the trash.
Sacred Lunch
For some employees, lunch is sacred. They will walk out of the office bang on their lunch time, REGARDLESS of what is going on.
They may be the only IT person, and all the computers are off line.
So what?
It is their Sacred Lunch period and the entire business comes to a dead stop while they stuff their face.
Since lunch is so important, let them have it in their own kitchens.
Super Fat
Many insurance companies are now declining to pay when a extremely fat person is injured on the job. Whether she breaks the chair, falls down, or knocks over something with her rear bumper, the insurers will not pay, and this means that it is the employers pocket.
Many companies have denied health insurance to smokers. Denying coverage to the obese is not totally unprecedented.
Persons who are that obese are often sufferers of many diseases, (many of which will be undiagnosed until they get health coverage from your company). Grossly obese people can barely walk fifty feet, asking them to do anything except sit is a problem. Further for the super fat lunch is sacrosanct as are coffee breaks and second breakfast.
Phone Phreaks
There are those who spend most of their life on their cell phones. They are so fascinated by the tech and the radiation has so effected their brains that they don't grasp the fact that you are paying them to work, not to be on the phone.
As they can't differentiate between work and not work they can stay home to prevent confusion.
The Categories are not closed
These are just a few of those who should never have been hired, the list, as I said before, goes on. The way to prevent the first mistake, that is hiring, is to construct the interview something like the psychological test. What one wants to expose in an interview are 'clues' concerning the character of the applicant.

Interesting. Different countries have different labor laws. In this country, the United States, to refuse to hire someone simply because the employers suspects that the person may be a potential walk-out, a potential phone phreak, or that lunch may become sacred to them, is violating the Equal Opportunity Employment laws. As for being overly fat, that's not grounds for refusing to hire someone either unless their fatness directly affect their ability to do the job they are applying for. Being overly fat would be legitimate reason to not hire someone who will have to climb ladders but not legitimate grounds to not hire such a person for a clerical position. The EOE laws aside, how do you propose that an employer know these things (fatness being obvious) about a potential employee? Hiring a professional profiler to do an in-depth psychological profile on every job applicant would not be cost-effective.

Thanks Kaylar for a relevant article and also a humorous read. And for the super pictures! Attitude is more important than aptitude and talents, I have observed in my working life. I have colleagues LOL on cell phones with scant concern for those around them. I also feel the employees should take care of their health and put themselves in the position of the employer, and of course, vice versa - siva

When you have a number of applicants for a position and you set the interview more like a 'psycho-drama', that is where you ask the kind of questions which the prospective has to answer in relation to the employment... for example; "As a manager, do you believe that you should spend most of your day 'on the floor'?"
The response of the Interviewer to either response is; "That's interesting, tell me why..." You can discern those who will be hands on and those who won't.
When you have an extremely fat person applying along with not fat people, it is easy to chose the not fat one; especially when one appreciates that there is one job and a dozen equally good applicants. "I liked the attitude of Miss Skinny the most, she seemed a real people person." Not that; "As soon as I saw Mrs. Obese I said no."
It is not a 'profiler' it is getting the right kind of interview. A geek whose going to be locked up in the backroom needs to be a real geek...(Dell actually gives hands on tests which are timed)...a front desk person has to meet the public. She might not have a single 'O' level but is warm and likeable.
I recall once being turned down for a job, (and also hiring) based on the nearness the person lived to the office. Those who can walk are usually rated above those who have to rely on transport

Like I said, different countries, different laws.

Jerry, if ten people come to you for one job, and you hire one of them, the other nine don't have much of a law suit against you for discrimination.
Sure if Miss Hired has a BA and the others have MAs then one can inquire, but if there are five people with similar qualifications why you hire one and not the other isn't that questionable.
Sure if everyone in the place is white then you can be forced to hire non-whites, or if everyone is male, then it looks somewhat fishy, but not hiring the fatest person in the room isn't actionable.

Kaylar, not this time. Not worth it to me. I said what I had to say and you disagree with it, so be it. Let those who read what you have to say and what I said in commenting on it decide for themselves. Unlike you, I don't have a need to always be right.

Kaylar, you have some interesting actionable advice regarding hiring people and relayed them in a very humorous way to be sure, I laughed out loud. You would make a great manager here in the US! I would gladly work for you, as long as you let me go to lunch on time, of course! Otherwise, I might just walk out.
