Depression After Retirement

Working is expected from every individual to contribute to the economy and after one has worked for several years then retirement is inevitable and so many people get depressed after going through this.

Retirement is a Must

After working for many years one has already formed a habit and it takes time to break it and some people wake up one day and feel that their life has lost meaning as they don't feel like they are useful anymore as they invested all their time in the job and that is what they relate to and since most of the people that they interact with are at the job place they may feel lonely and isolated leading to depression.

A job in a way gives someone the sense of belonging as one wakes up with purpose for the day and can access many things including vacation, allowances that come to an end on retirement and this can be very devastating for most individuals and if help is not available then depression sets in.

With retirement comes old age and the sense that someone has been told that they are no longer viable in the work place can make an individual look at their life and feel sorry for themselves and question whether they lived their live to the best of their ability and the regrets that they have.

On retirement most people collect a pension and this is just a small percent of the amount that they were able to make while working and if someone has a lifestyle that is not easy to maintain then it can lead to depression.

Free time is very good if it's for a while but when one has too much free time with nothing to fill it with can lead to boredom and if it is not addressed after a long time can bring a break down to the person.

If this individual did not develop hobbies away from work and is not willing to learn something new then it is possible to sink into depression as they wonder what to do with themselves.

Once someone retires and does not move about then the body and mind deteriorates and even simple tasks become difficult to accomplish and this may lower the self esteem of an individual leading to depression.

On retirement it would be very favorable for the former employer to provide an incentive kind of programme that involves the retired employees to make them feel appreciated and see that they are still important instead of signing them off to their complete retirement as well as the eventual death rest.

I am introverted and enjoy spending time in quite places and thus I have adopted reading as a second nature and I have just now began to write and I love to cook.

It is how we view retirement. When one works in private establishments, better to retire than be told to leave and looked down upon. I firmly believe when one door closes, we should transit to another seamlessly. We should be ever prepared in life. That is how we should take life that has many stages. Agreed, it proves tough on some who get used to familiar turf and unwilling to try out the new freedom. Thanks Rosaline, for the share that resonates with many - siva
